About Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are not just a hotel-nightmare. They sneak into homes in Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale and around Arizona and settle into the sleeping zone like unwelcome roommates.

They hide in mattress seams, box springs, headboards, even behind baseboards and electrical outlets. And once they’ve moved in, they don’t just vanish overnight.

At Fromm’s Pest Control we’ve treated countless bed bug situations across the Valley. We know how they behave, where they hide, what makes them spread, and most importantly, how to stop them. This isn’t about spray-and-forget. It’s about targeted action, follow-up and inspection until they’re gone.

Common Bed Bug Facts for Arizona Homes

What Do Bed Bugs Look Like?

Adult bed bugs are flat, oval-shaped, about the size of an apple seed, reddish-brown. After feeding they swell and become darker. Nymphs (immature bed bugs) are smaller, lighter in color and harder to spot. They’ll hide in cracks and crevices, mattress seams, upholstery folds or even behind wall décor.

Where Do They Hide & How Do They Spread?

Bed bugs hitchhike. Luggage, luggage racks, hotel beds, second-hand furniture, used mattresses. Once inside your home, they move very quietly and slowly. They prefer sleeping zones because that’s when humans are still and vulnerable. You won’t necessarily hear them  but you’ll often find signs.

Why They’re Hard to Eliminate

By the time you notice bites or signs, colonies may already be established. The eggs are resistant, hiding places are abundant, and normal home spray products seldom reach the deep nests. That’s why professional treatment is key.

Signs You Might Have a Bed Bug Problem

  • Small red or itchy bites on exposed skin after sleeping
  • Rusty-colored stains on sheets or mattresses (blood from crushed bugs)
  • Dark fecal spots along mattress seams, furniture edges or wall cracks
  • Shed skins or eggshells near bed frames, nightstands or behind headboards
  • A musty, sweet-like odour in severe infestations

What Attracts Bed Bugs to Arizona Homes?

It’s less about mess and more about access. Things that invite bed bugs include:

  • Frequent travel and bringing luggage inside
  • Used furniture or mattresses brought into the home
  • Close proximity to multi-unit buildings where they’ve spread
  • Clutter around beds, nightstands, baseboards giving hiding spaces

DIY vs Professional Bed Bug Control

You can try home fixes, but bed bugs are rarely solved with one DIY attempt. Textbook solutions like mattress encasements, hot laundering of bedding, and vacuuming help—but they often serve as support to professional treatment, not a replacement.

At Fromm’s Pest Control you’ll get:

  • A full inspection of bed zones, adjacent rooms and hiding spots
  • Identification of the extent of infestation and likely harborages
  • A tailored treatment plan heat, chemical treatments, steam, dusts as needed
  • Post-treatment monitoring, follow-up visits and prevention advice

Prevention Tips to Keep Bed Bugs Out

  • Inspect and clean luggage and clothing after travel; use hot wash and high heat dryer
  • When staying in hotels, check mattress seams, headboard, box spring before unpacking
  • Use mattress and box spring encasements if you’ve had past issues
  • Avoid bringing used mattresses or upholstered furniture inside without thorough inspection
  • Reduce clutter in bedrooms; vacuum regularly, don’t let items pile around beds
  • Seal cracks around baseboards and trim near sleeping areas
