Cockroaches & Roaches

Cockroaches are one of the most persistent pests in Arizona. They hide in drains, bathrooms, garages, wall voids and outdoor moisture pockets, then come out at night when everything is quiet. Some roaches fly, some crawl, and all of them move fast. Once they settle on a property, they reproduce quickly and spread through plumbing lines, cracks, wall gaps and even tiny openings you did not know existed.

Common Cockroaches Found in Arizona

Fromms Pest Control handles roach infestations across Phoenix, Mesa, Peoria, Scottsdale, Chandler, Glendale and surrounding cities. We focus on finding where the roaches live, breaking the breeding cycle and treating the areas that actually matter. Store sprays might kill a few. We target the source so the activity stops.

Arizona has several roach species that show up around homes. The most common include:

American Cockroach

Large, reddish brown roaches often found in sewer systems, drains, irrigation boxes, garages and utility rooms. They can fly short distances and are highly active during monsoon season.

Turkestan Cockroach

One of the fastest growing nuisance roaches in Arizona. Males are reddish tan with wings, females are darker with shorter wings. They thrive outdoors in rock beds, wall cracks and irrigation areas, then move inside through door gaps and plumbing.

German Cockroach

Small, light brown roaches that infest kitchens and bathrooms. They reproduce extremely fast and are commonly found in apartments, restaurants and multi family buildings. These roaches hide in appliances, cabinets, electrical outlets and tight crevices.

Oriental Cockroach

Darker roaches that prefer cool, damp areas such as under sinks, crawlspaces and shaded soil. Less common but still found in older neighborhoods with heavy moisture pockets.

Where Roaches Hide in Arizona Homes

Roaches choose damp, dark and hidden areas where they can breed undisturbed. Common hiding spots include:

  • bathroom and kitchen drains
  • under sinks and behind plumbing
  • behind refrigerators and dishwashers
  • inside cabinets and wall voids
  • garage storage corners
  • cracks in stucco or foundations
  • outdoor irrigation boxes and valve covers
  • rock beds and block wall seams

In Arizona, monsoon moisture and warm nights make roaches especially active during summer and early fall.

Signs You Have a Roach Problem

You might notice:

  • sightings at night when lights come on
  • droppings that look like fine black pepper
  • a musty odor coming from cabinets or drains
  • egg cases or shed skins behind appliances
  • roaches running along walls or baseboards
  • small roaches appearing in bathrooms or kitchens

If you are seeing German roaches in daylight, it usually means the infestation is already well established.

Why Roaches Are Common in Arizona

Cockroaches thrive in Arizona because the environment gives them everything they need:

  • heat year round
  • consistent irrigation and moisture pockets
  • easy access to drains and sewer lines
  • shade under rocks, patios and foundations
  • crumbs, leaks and leftover food in kitchens

Homes with rock landscaping, older plumbing, or heavy irrigation see more roach activity than homes with dry, open perimeters.

Are Roaches Dangerous?

Roaches contaminate food, spread bacteria and trigger allergies and asthma, especially in children. Their droppings and shed skins build up quickly in hidden areas and attract other pests. In large infestations, the smell becomes noticeable around cabinets and drains.

Because German roaches reproduce so quickly, a small problem can become a full infestation within weeks.

DIY vs Professional Roach Control

Store sprays and foggers kill only the roaches you see. They do not reach:

  • nests inside walls
  • deep cracks under appliances
  • drain systems
  • breeding sites behind cabinets
  • moisture zones where colonies expand

Foggers often make infestations worse by driving roaches deeper into the structure. Effective roach control requires a combination of baiting, crack and crevice treatment, moisture reduction and targeted applications in entry points.

Fromms Pest Control uses professional products designed to reach hidden roach harborage zones. We identify the species, trace the nesting locations and break the breeding cycle completely.

How Roaches Enter Arizona Homes

Roaches enter through:

  • drains and sewer line gaps
  • cracks around exterior doors
  • plumbing and utility penetrations
  • garage gaps and worn weather stripping
  • packages, boxes and used appliances
  • shared walls in multi unit buildings

Once inside, they spread quickly to bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms.

Roach Prevention Tips

You can reduce roach activity with simple steps:

  • fix moisture leaks under sinks and behind appliances
  • run garbage disposal regularly
  • seal gaps around doors, windows and utility lines
  • keep drains clean and covered when possible
  • store pantry items in sealed containers
  • reduce clutter in storage and garage areas
  • avoid leaving pet food out overnight

These steps help, but established infestations require professional treatment.
