What are these mud looking strings hanging from my ceiling?

If you live in Arizona then chances are you have seen this string of mud hanging from your ceiling or coming out from the wall. If you haven’t seen these mud tubes then you should probably go buy yourself a Powerball ticket. These mud tubes are known as Subterranean Termite tubes. YES, I said it TERMITES!! YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE. Your largest investment also known as your home. The scary thing is, most people just see the mud tubes as dirt or dust and knock them down without knowing its termites. Meanwhile, the termites are feasting at the unlimited buffet which is YOUR HOME. Termites are blind and live in colonies below your home. They come up through those dirt tubes and eat the wood from your home. They are commonly attracted be high moisture area because the prefer damp or decaying wood (much easier to eat). It doesn’t take long for termite to chew up a baseboard, destroy a door frame, floor joist, studs and even the subfloors. On the exterior of the home you can see them come up through the exterior stemwall and work their way into your home. They are also commonly found in the garage coming up the sides of the wall. They love to eat the glue on cardboard, plastic, paper etc. You can also come across very fine black powdery pellets also known as frass which is also termite feces. The fine black powdery pellets are from the Drywood termite also common is Arizona.
